Elementary Programs
Students enrolled in a High Point Academy Elementary program receive regular in-person academic instructions that help them to become life-long learners with a natural curiosity for knowledge and advancement.
Kindergarten
Aged 5 years by September 1st
Students in Kindergarten are making the transition either from preschool or their home environment. For some of our students, this is their first experience being in a school setting.

During this transitional year of school where they are adjusting to a more structured school setting, students will learn things such as:
-
Printing and recognizing letters and sounds, as well as combining them to create words and sentences
-
Understanding spoken words, syllables, and sounds to apply phonetical knowledge
-
Beginning to read and understand written text through stories and works of literature, learning to analyze, asking and answering questions about what they have read
-
Understanding, representing, and comparing whole numbers using objects
-
Describing the physical world using geometric ideas and vocabulary, including both 2-D and 3-D shapes

First Grade
Aged 6 years by September 1st
Students in First Grade have made the transition from preschool to primary school and are feeling more comfortable in the routines. They are ready to advance their basic abilities and have a curiosity for knowledge.

Throughout their First Grade year, students will embark on a journey to discover more involved topics, such as:
-
Understanding the organization and basic features of the printed English Language (i.e. punctuation, capitalization, etc.)
-
Gaining reading fluency and comprehension, being able to read more confidently on their own
-
Developing their understanding of addition, extending their knowledge through number 20 by learning place values
-
Exploring and understanding more clearly the composure of geometric shapes and measurements
Second Grade
Aged 7 years by September 1st
Students in the Second Grade are typically confident in their academic and social abilities, and charge forward unto knew knowledge. They have learned the basics, and are ready for advancement into more difficult topics.

Over the course of their Second Grade year, students will have the opportunity to challenge themselves by learning along some of the following topics:
-
Advancing phonetic awareness by encountering prefixes and suffixes, and continuing to read and spell irregularly spelled words
-
Advance in reading fluency and comprehension, by understanding rhythm of writing, perspective and points of view, and comparing works
-
Understanding the meaning of counting in units, expanding their numerical knowledge through the thousands and beginning addition and subtraction through 100
-
Enlarging knowledge of geometry and measurement by examining angles and combining shapes

Third Grade
Aged 8 years by September 1st
Students in Third Grade are experiencing what we call the middle pond. They are not such little fish, but not yet big fish. In previous grades, learning is scaffolded by the learning of the prior years. That is still the case here, but students are beginning to take giant leaps, rather than baby steps. These learners are still eager, and show certainty and determination to overcome the challenges of this grade level.

In their Third Grade year, students will begin a new jaunt of learning, where they will embrace more ambitious topics, such as:
-
Interacting with prose, poetry, informational texts, and other more complex works of literature to be able to describe logical connections, decipher illustrations, and recount key details of texts.
-
Encountering multiplication and division within 100 for the first time, as well as arrays and areas
-
Develop an understanding of fractions, and how they can represent different parts of a whole unit, including using geometric regions to explain concepts
Fourth Grade
Aged 9 years by September 1st
Students in the Fourth Grade have begun to truly flourish, coming into themselves, and discovering who they are as learners and individuals. They have grown infinitely more independent, and are able to self-advocate within the learning space.

Amid their Fourth Grade year, students
-
Continuing to explore and expand upon their reading fluency and comprehension, using their knowledge to summarize texts, interpret information, and accurately read unfamiliar words
-
Expanding along their knowledge of multiplication and division, understanding how to perform these operations with larger numbers
-
Honing their experiences with fractions by beginning to learn equivalence and addition, subtraction, and multiplication operations with fractions

Fifth Grade
Aged 10 years by September 1st
Students in Fifth Grade are experiencing their final hurrah before their departure from the primary school program and embarking on their next expedition: Middle School.

In order to ensure students are secure in their knowledge and ready to take on new projects with confidence, students will study topics such as:
-
Combining knowledge learned in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade to independently experience texts and draw conclusions, compare and contrast, determine themes, and understand figurative language.
-
Utilizing their knowledge of fractions and models to represent mathematical expressions, and to study decimals
-
Classifying geometrical shapes by properties, including measurements and physical properties, as well as understanding graphing on a coordinate plane.
