Character Education

As part of the High Point Academy preschool curriculum, students will engage in a character development program.

We believe that it is never to early to begin teaching our children these vital skills that they will need to become well-rounded individuals who exhibit leadership, compassion, and self-confidence, in addition to academic prowess and growth.

What is Character Education and how does it work in Early Childhood Education?

Each week, as part of their weekly focus, your child's classroom will have an assigned value.

Students will:

  • Discuss what the value means

  • Talk about why the value is important

  • View and create examples of how they can show the value. For example

    • We can show that we exhibit good friendship qualities by recognizing when friends are upset and try to help them

    • We can show good manners by waiting our turn in conversations and allowing others to voice their thoughts along with our own

    • We can show that we care for others when we help a friend who has fallen down on the playground.

What values will my child learn?

How can I be involved with my child's character value education as their parent/guardian?

Discuss the weekly value with your child, as well as examples of how we can show the behaviors.

  • Share stories with your child showing times when you were creative, honest, responsible, etc.

  • Model good citizenship and pro-social behaviors with our child, especially emotional competence, empathy, and compassion.

  • Recognize real-life situations that make excellent modeling opportunities such as exhibiting positive self-talk or discussing the beauty in embracing people and communities which are different from our own.

  • Discuss specific values on holidays/events, such as Thankfulness on Thanksgiving, Love and Friendship around Valentine's Day, or Health around the time of your child's annual physical exam.

Parents and family members are often childrens' first teachers, and classroom teachers are part of your teaching team. If we work together, we can ensure that, not only are your children successful, but they can flourish.
